How many chiral centers does 2 ethylpentane have?

Submitted by OrgoQuestions

@OrgoQuestions how many chiral centers does 2 ethylpentane have? Isn't it none since carbon 2 is attached to 2 ch2, ch3, h?

@OrgoQuestions, 2 of the substituents are the same, (ch2), so it does not follow the 4 diff subs. rule 4 it to have a chiral center, right?

Sorry for the late reply, there is no such compound as 2-ethylpentane, because the longest chain has 6-carbons. #Orgo

So what you mean is 3-methyl-hexane, and yes, this compound is chiral.

That's because carbon #3 is connected to 4 different substituents: H, CH3, CH2CH3, and CH2CH2CH3. #OChem
