1. Michael addition of an aldehyde and methyl vinyl ketone (butenone).
2. Intramolecular aldol condensation to form the β-hydroxyl carbonyl (3-hydroxy cyclohexanone).
3. Elimination to form the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl (cyclohexenone).
